Event Scheduled for October 3, 2021
SANDPOINT _ The Bay Trail Fun Run is back after a one-year hiatus and is now scheduled for this October. The scenic waterfront 5K and 10K course gives friends and neighbors from all over the opportunity to walk and run side by side to support the Friends of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail mission and enjoy the stunning views of the lake, creek, and surrounding mountains. Now in its 9th year, the family-friendly fun run is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3, starting at 9 a.m. at Sandpoint City Beach. The run, a fundraiser for the Friends of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail, follows the Bay Trail out and back for the 5K course and continues on the Creekside Trail, alongside Sand Creek, for the 10K route. It’s a mostly flat course, with a mix of pavement and dirt path. Approximately 400 runners and walkers are expected to register.
Sign up by September 13, to be sure to get your correct T-shirt size. Top winners will receive a pair of running shoes, courtesy of Outdoor Experience. Racers also receive T-shirts, medals and other goodies. This popular community event is intended to support the enhancement and expansion of the lakeshore trail by connecting the communities of Sandpoint, Ponderay and Kootenai through programs like the Brownfields Cleanup and Front Yard Project.
This year marks the 10th year anniversary of the Friends of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail. The first Fun Run was a decade ago, too, shortly after the trail along the lakeshore was opened to the public when the cities of Sandpoint and Ponderay began purchasing privately held property along the shoreline. The Bay Trail Fun Run both celebrates the opening of this mile and a half of shoreline to the public and introduces people to the shoreline trail who haven’t experienced it before.
On-line registration begins August 1st and ends on October 2nd. Click here to register in advance. Registration costs $25 per person over 13 years old. Kids 12 and under are free. Race-day registration is $30 per person over 13 years old, starting at 7 a.m. Early registrants can pick up packets from 4 to 6 p.m., October 2, 2021 at the tent by Trinity at City Beach.b
